Video footage of snares in the Scottish countryside

This film from Onekind, starring Bill Oddie, demonstrates the extent of snaring in the Scottish countryside. Snares uncovered: Killers in the countryside, shows Bill's disbelief at the number of animal snares placed on a typical estate, as well as his shock at the indiscriminate nature of these cruel devices. PLEASE NOTE: This film does include OneKind library footage of animals caught in snares, which you may find distressing. Take action at www.onekind.org

  1. I've got my foot caught in fox snares several times when out running. I was lucky they didn't snap my Achilles' tendon. And I know for a fact our local gamekeeper didn't check them regularly, sometimes not for weeks. Nasty things, and nasty people that set them.

    1. Whenever I find them I pull the holding stake out of the ground. I should cut them up, really.

Disgusting things. Disgusting people who set them. Disgusting people who go shooting the grouse, which is why there are snares in the first place.

    1. It does leave you feeling depressed that we can do this to animals.

I feel a "snare walk" coming on - pulling out as many as possible near grouse moors.

  3. Snares must by law be checked daily and some say they do have their, albeit, limited uses. However that does not excuse indescriminate use of them and I see no excuse for them on the hill. In fact I won't allow them to be used period. Interesting that Carbofuran, a poison outlawed for years in Scotland, is legal in England. In fact the Minister is in trouble for not banning it. Often found on estates in Scotland and blamed on being old stock it would seem more like that landowners with estates in England are not so concerned about using it illegally here.

    1. Perhaps we should encourage landowners whose gamekeepers use these poisons to try some themselves? We could slip a wire noose around their necks at the same time so it cuts in deeply during their death throes.

We could post the resulting videos on Al Jazeera.

Just a thought... Seems fair to me...
