Found: Film footage of our Dad!

My brother Dave has been busy! He has unearthed what looks to be an Imperial War Museum clip of 6 Squadron flying Hurricanes in the Western Desert in WW2. The first man who appears in the film is definitely our Dad! Good find!

OUR DAD IS THE FIRST MAN WHO APPEARS IN THIS FILM!

  1. Wow! That is some footage. I wonder how it was filmed. The tank attack appears to be taken from the ground but I can't imagine an allied cameraman being down there amongst the German tanks.

I read the piece about your Dad - very moving. As I was born in 1939 I do have some memories of the war, and the aftermath.

    1. Hi Conrad.
I think those scenes are obviously staged, but they do portray how the tank-busters went about their business quite well.
It was a lovely surprise to see our Dad as a young man. We have his photograph album of his war, but to see him come alive on this clip was rather special.

  2. Thanks for posting the footage. I was born way after the war, but was brought up to appreciate the hard work and bravery of people like your dad.

    1. Hi Mark, and welcome
      :-)
I don't think they ever considered themselves 'brave', but those of us left to enjoy our freedom certainly do.

    1. Hi fella.
I'm not sure about 'proud' - more 'pleased as punch' to see him as a young man in a period of his life that he never talked about.

  4. Hi Alan. That's an amazing find, and it's an amazing film. What blokes like your father went through out there is beyond imagination. We can only sit in our confortable homes and marvel at their strength and determination.
I'm off to search footage of the Korean War now to see if I can find my own dad.
    Cheers, Alen
